Sermon Illustrations - Sermon Illustrations from Akeelah and the Bee (2006)

In a Los Angeles inner-city middle school, Akeelah is wasting away. Unchallenged by the academic work, her accomplishments overshadowed by her brother's bad behavior, she immerses herself in her late father's favorite pastime, spelling. But when the time comes for the school-wide spelling bee, Akeelah shies away, not wanting to be labeled a "braniac." Her principal, Mr. Welch, encourages her to enter, and when she wins, he gets her a coach for the next level -- the renowned English professor, Dr. Larabee. What follows is a story of perseverance, perfection, compassion, and competition that challenges each of us to "make manifest God's glory" in everything we do.
